Acoustic Union String Band

  

Acoustic Union is a collaboration of likeminded acoustic musicians lead by Ruffcut Anderson. The band works as a Solo, Duo or Trio Ensemble.

We have a passion for good handmade music, and are largely influenced by the music of; Johnny Cash, Steve Earle, Tom Waits and Country Blues greats. We perform a mix of Dustbowl Era originals and tunes from music's Golden Age. Old Time, Country Blues, Hillbilly and Bluegrass style melodies.

Our Music is performed on string band instruments that are typical of the style and era. Banjo, Guitar, Resonators and Double Bass. Producing a unique and unforgettable authentic soundscape!

                            Americana, Hillbilly and Traditional Country Blues performers

This Brisbane based band performs in various authentic 1920s golden age and contempory musical

styles. Our musical influences come from traditional artists such as Yank Rachell, The Mississippi 

Sheiks, Tommy Johnson and The Memphis Jug Band. We are also inspired by modern musicians 

such as; Steve Earle, Steve James, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, The Ten Cent Shooters and C.W. 

Stoneking. Instruments include; traditional and resonator guitar, 5 string banjo, double bass and 

vocals.

Band Members

Mark Anderson aka Ruffcut Anderson : Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. is a founding member of Brisbane bands Dirt Music and The Jook Joint Boys. Ruffcut formed Acoustic Union as a vehicle for the live performance of Americana acoustic music with like-minded supporting artists. Since its formation in 2009, Acoustic Union has performed in and around the Darling Downs and Toowoomba region at the Nobby Music Festival, The Stanthorpe Winery, The Boogie Shack and Strummers Folk Music Club and performances at various Brisbane venues such as; The Brisbane Convention Centre and The Black Bear lodge (formerly The Troubadour).

Mal Nebe: On double bass has been the engine room for many Brisbane bands and performers over the years crossing genres such as Bluegrass, Blues, Rockabilly and Gypsy Jazz. Mal was most notably the double bass player for The Backwoodstompers, The Muleskinners and Gypsy Jazz ensemble Bellville.

When times were tough live music got going……

The great depression of the late 1920’s saw music like the Negro blues, and the dust bowl era of Woodie Guthrie. In the 1960’s times were a changing. The dynamic rhythm and lyrics of Bob Dylan were number one around the world. People were healed and revolutions’ were started. The musical styles of these artists were copied and new songs were written. New ways of playing were developed.

There are still musicians today, who carry on these traditional styles, but with their own soul and feeling added. The likes of C.W. Stoneking, with his contempory slant on traditional Hokum Blues. He has been nominated twice. And this year he received an ARIA award for the best Blues and Roots album of the year 2009.

Trad Style Musicians Chad Swaby and Mark Ruff-Cut Anderson have combined talents, and are now performing under the name Acoustic Union. Together, they have created a fantastic show of songs. Paying tribute to traditional and modern artists, mixed in with breathtaking originals. All performed on string band instruments that are typical of the style. Banjo, Mandolin, Harmonica, Guitar and stomp box. Producing a unique and unforgettable soundscape!
